Saturn Black & White

Saturn with moons

887,140,000 miles from the sun.

Its year is 29.46 Earth years long.

Its day is 10 hours, 40 minutes and 24 seconds.  Wow!

Its diameter is 74,978 miles across.

Its atmosphere is 80% Metallic Hydrogen & Helium

Its temperature is +176o degrees Fahrenheit to

-203o degrees Fahrenheit.

Saturn is a very powerful planet.  Like Jupiter is put out more energy than the sun provides to it.  80% more power!  Scientists are still trying to figure it out.  Winds have been measured at 1100 miles per hour!!   Saturn's day is very short, like Jupiter's, rotating once every 10+ hours.   And Saturn's ground, like Jupiter's, is softer than Earth's water.  If Earth water is said to have a density of '1', Saturn's ground would be a 0.7, that's 30% softer- almost a cloudlike.

Saturn has many moons.  Some scientists say 19, others say 23 now.  Because Saturn has hundreds of rings encircling it, we are still discovering its satellites.  Most of what makes up Saturn's rings is dust and ice.   But one of Saturn's moons is nearly as big as Jupiter's Ganymede.  The moon is called Titan; and, it is 3200 miles in diameter (that's 67.6 miles bigger than Mercury).   Titan is also very special because it has an atmosphere- mostly Nitrogen, and some methane and other hydrocarbons.  Titan is covered with gas clouds.  Could it have life?

Titan, the second largest satellite in our system.

Saturn is very gaseous.  Note the swirling disturbance- middle.

Saturn's beautiful rings.   Only Uranus is  close to its ring layers.
